Take your time

The 54kms from Thames to Coromandel town is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenic routes. It hugs the coast for 30kms, and then winds over hills that provide spectacular panoramic views of the sea, farmland and islands that are part of the Coromandel landscape. If you drive fast, it takes 50 minutes but why not take your time and enjoy the beauty along the way.

Look out for the old baches (beach houses) that are an essential element of the Coromandel peninsula’s west coast and have disappeared from so many other parts of NZ.

Slow down at Waikawau – this little settlement is made up of old railway carriages that have been added onto and made into permanent baches.

Buy an icecream and enjoy it on one of the beach reserves en route.

Stop at the lookout at the top of Kirita Hill and marvel at the breathtaking view that stretches out before you.

After Manaia you have a shorter hill climb. Catch a glimpse of Coromandel Town in the distance as you descend this hill which overlooks Te Kouma.

Stay on the main road and you’ll soon see Jacaranda Lodge. It’s on the right hand side 500m past the 309 Road. Drive in for a warm welcome and a memorable stay.

(One last thought. You might want to have a coffee before you start out as there are no cafes on the main road between Thames and Coromandel - I can recommend Sola Café in Pollen St, Thames).

Other traveling distances and times (allow more time if you want to include sightseeing):
